Trump has already declared his candidacy for the 2024 presidential cycle, and a series of posts on his Truth Social platform on Thursday morning provided no information about today’s announcement.
However, the former president “retruthed” his post from Wednesday about the impending announcement and made a series of posts criticizing the state of the nation.
“The thousands of people illegally coming into our Country on a daily basis is a DISASTER and, considering how many of them there are, and what they’re bringing with them, not so much different than a military invasion,” Trump wrote.
“Two years ago we had the safest Border in U.S. history, now we have, by far, the WORST!” he posted.
“Our Country is a MESS!” Trump added in another post.
On Wednesday, Trump shared a 15-second video that began with the Republican looking into a camera and saying, “America needs a superhero.” The clip then showed a cartoon image of Trump styled to look like Superman.
“AMERICA NEEDS A SUPERHERO! I will be making a MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT tomorrow. Thank you!” he wrote.
It’s not yet clear what time Trump will make his announcement or what form it will take. The contents of Trump’s announcement are also unknown, and the former president has given no real clues about it.
That’s led to widespread speculation about what he might say among both supporters and critics.
“Trump to make ‘major announcement’ on Thursday? Will he announce a third party run? House Speaker bid? His running mate?” conservative commentator Todd Starnes tweeted.
There has been some focus on the possibility that Trump could announce his choice of vice-presidential nominee, though ABC News executive editorial producer John Santucci appeared to quash that idea in a tweet on Thursday.
“Listening to morning radio in NY - let’s knock one rumor down - Trump ‘major announcement’ is NOT a running mate per a source,” he tweeted.
Helen Kennedy, formerly of the New York Daily News and Boston Herald, responded to Santucci, tweeting: “My money’s on a grand return to twitter. I’m amazed he’s lasted this long.”
However, Santucci replied: “Save your money. Trust me,” but he did not offer further details.
Trump has sometimes been talked about as a potential Republican speaker of the House and the new GOP majority is expected to elect one in January, with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy facing some opposition from his own party that could prevent him from winning on the first ballot.
While the House GOP could technically elect Trump as speaker, he is already running for president.
Others have suggested Trump may announce a lawsuit of some kind, and possible targets could include the House Select Committee investigating January 6. The former president also “retruthed” a post criticizing the committee on Thursday morning.
Newsweek has asked Trump’s office for comment.
