Lou Piniella was at Yankee Stadium on Sunday for Old Timer’s Day, suiting up in the pinstripes he wore to win World Series in 1977 and 1978. It was 30 years after that, in 2007 and 2008, that Piniella skippered Chicago to back-to-back division titles — the only time since 1906-08 that the Cubs have made consecutive postseason appearances. Chicago appears on track to match Piniella’s achievement this year, following last season’s wild card appearance and trip to the NLCS....

Christopher Godfrey, formerly the Iowa Workers’ Compensation Commissioner, has been awarded $1.5 million in damages, though that amount could grow. Godfrey had been appointed to a six-year term by Branstad’s predecessor, Chet Culver, a Democrat. After Branstad was elected in 2010 he requested Godfrey resign. According to Branstad, he requested all department heads and division directors resign so he could put in his own staffers. Three officials, including Godfrey, refused....

Former detective Peter Michael Shepherd, 63, and Eric Smith, 41, who is accused of leasing the property where the plants were grown, were both arrested Tuesday by the Klamath County Sheriff’s Office. The two men face the same charges: unlawful manufacture of marijuana and “engaging in a financial transaction in property derived from unlawful activity,” Klamath County District Attorney Eve Costello told the Herald and News. The Klamath County Sheriff’s Office and Basin Interagency Narcotics Enforcement Team (BINET) discovered the illegally grown marijuana after a September 16 visit to Shepherd’s property outside of Dairy, Oregon....
